A Closer Look at Mariannet Amper’s Sad Fate

Mariannet Amper could have been famous by being on GMA 7’s Wish Ko Lang rather than her death. Everyone thought poverty claimed her life and that the government was to be blamed for it directly. Soon, protests were taken to the streets to shame public officials who mishandle taxes and corrupt their way into more riches. The whole nation mourned as everyone reexamined the circumstances that surrounded the 12 year old’s suicide: both her parents were unemployed, she couldn’t go to school and her family could barely make ends meet. Although these reasons could be possible causes for her early death, some weren’t convinced:

“It is unfair to simply look at suicide in that angle (poverty). After all, many poor Filipinos do not resort to killing themselves despite their hopeless condition. And there have been cases of children born to well-to-do families who have committed or attempted suicide.

Suicide is not an instant decision, she said. It is borne out of a suicidal tendency that the child develops within himself.

Suicidal tendency, in turn, is a psychosocial and multi-factorial behavior that is developed through time when the child faces long-standing problems within himself and in his immediate environment.”

- Dr. Ma. Luz Casimiro-Querubin (psychiatrist)

True. Someone as young as her couldn’t just decide to end her life because of poverty; it’s not something kids would think about. So to give everyone peace of mind, her body was exhumed and reexamined only to reveal that she had been raped. Although the lacerations found in her gentalia were old wounds, the fact that she bore those scars were enough proof to consider foul play or worse, a traumatic experience that could have pushed her to commit suicide.

Mrs. Magdalena Amper, Mariannet’s mother, defended her husband and her sons saying that her daughter could have had those wounds because she liked to ride bicycles and climb trees. Her family couldn’t do such a thing to her daughter and she wouldn’t know of anyone who could have done that to her. Unless the dead could speak, the investigators’ only chance of solving this case is for someone to come forward and testify. But seeing as everyone is clueless or trying to conceal their guilt, then this case is as good as unsolved when left to rot in the hands of PNP.

It’s not that I’m being too pessimistic, but considering PNP’s terrible track record of solving cases in this country, I think it’s only fair to have doubts or second thoughts on their capabilities. I mean, just look at how miraculous these guys worked in the Glorietta 2 and the Batasang Pambansa Bombings, have you ever seen them solve cases that fast or capture the culprits that effective? Almost everyone is crying planted evidence but as far as the PNP is concerned, they did a damn good job. It might be just me or has justice been absent in this country for too long that seeing our cops do a good job looks weird? But still, having faith in them shouldn’t hurt; not everything they did resulted to falsehoods.

If you look at this closely, the government and poverty weren’t the ones that killed this child: possible but not quite. If rape could be proven, then clearly, someone should be put behind bars. I find it hard to believe that Mariannet could have set the stage for her death because it’s more probable that someone else did. Plus, why were some pages in her diary torn, to conceal evidence? If their family was really close, as what her mother attests, then how come no one noticed her depressed state or did no one bother to ask her what the hell was troubling her little head? It could be poverty, the government officials, her ‘rapist’ or it could be as simple as being unloved or having been paid little or no attention.

This case started out with one person, the victim, but as investigators unravel the twists that hide the truth, the plot thickens. Soon, everyone close to the family will be hauled in for questions and probably torture, lest the PNP can pinpoint who the real culprit is. This case should be closed soon but it should be done with accuracy and precision so we can properly say justice served.

My only fear in this whole event is that this case would remain unsolved. Because if it does, I’d hate to think that our current situation as a nation can help and escalate the number of people capable of doing such damage to a young and innocent girl.

  • the administration has lost all credibility that nobody knows what to believe anymore. any pnp proclamation should be treated as nothing more than ‘palabas ni presidente’.

  • Wow Nina, I really need to catch up on my reading. I did not see this twist about Mariannet as possibly a victim of rape….. but then again with the kind of criminologist major in agriculture investigators we have to borrow Schumey’s description of our law enforcement can we really rely on their credibility?

It seems that no one will come out as a winner in this no win situation, what with the kind of leaders we have that will stretch anything and everything to escape culpability in the way they mismanage our nation.

  • jaywalker:
they found old lacerations in her genitalia. her mother said it could be from mariannet’s love for climbing trees and riding her bike. But i don’t think so.

  • Your basing your arguments based on the things that have been said by PNP ‘experts’ for old lacerations?
You’re believing people on what they’re saying which actually the report may result their job or even their lives?

The Davao Mayor is a GMA supporter.
PNP are basically are included on government payroll.
The Mariannet case is an embarassment to GMA regime.
If you’re the Davao Mayor, what would you do?

Don’t you think it’s quite too late to do the autopsy after the body has been buried already?
Could be the autopsy have done BEFORE the body was burried?

why were some pages in her diary torn, you ask?
As a child who wrote things on cheap notebooks,
could the missing pages were torn by Mariannet herself? Children likes to write, draw, make drafts and torn pages from notebooks.

Everyone on the Amper family were very sad/devastated, and here comes “we-know-better-than-you” people saying that, No, it is not because of poverty, lets dig up the grave. tsk, tsk, tsk.

    Everyone knows who raped Marrianet.
The media, the GMA-supporters and YOU who are buying the rape-angle.

    necrophiliacs

  • your conscience:
if mariannet wasn’t raped, why doesn’t her family contest the findings? would the PNP be so idiotic as to slash Mariannet’s genitals just so they could pronounce her raped? I don’t think so.

I’m basing arguments on reports which, up until now, hasn’t been contested by anyone.

Maybe your the one who needs additional eyes.

    p.s.
thanks for dropping by my blog. ;)

  • do you think authorities will hear any pleadings that will be made by the poor family?

    reports?
all reports can be produced by the government.
even statistics that the country is improving can be provided and be bought by people like you.
yes, even election reports can be produced to show who cheated or who won.

impeachment was being thrown over and over again. had the move have been contested?

you are so easy to be bought, girl.

maybe you are not looking close enough.

  • your conscience:
the amper family didn’t deny the rape report = which means that even they acknowledge that finding by the pnp = which means that mariannet being raped is an accepted event unless proven otherwise.
besides, the government wouldn’t spend that much attention on this case. they have their hands busy with all the circus up in congress e.g. jdv’s case, pgma’s impeachment, erap’s ill-gotten waelth etc. mariannet isn’t worth pgma’s time.

  • Are you sure what you’re saying girl?
or you’re just opening your mouth and just saying whatever comes out from your mouth?

amper family didnt deny the rape?
    is this ur imagination?
acknowledge that finding by the pnp government admits responsibility for suicide of the girl

  • hahaha! now you’re moderating comments on your post. hehehe, afraid of being embarassed?

    now, your conscience is calling
and you’re trying to ignore it

  • your conscience:
duh, the comment moderation setting for my blog is automatic. If you post too many links it’ll get moderated. I cant change it sorry. But I only moderate spam comments. (see your comments below).

youve seen the video yourself of the ampers’ interviews regarding the rape right? and if you read my post, the mother has said that mariannet might have gotten those lacerations because of her fondness for climbing trees etcetc…but what do the doctors/medical experts say about the claim? have you heard about other examiners contesting the pnp’s findings? none.

of course the family will contest, ive acknowledged that in my post, but the medico legal/s who examined her didn’t. although i havent heard of other doctors who are willing to examine her again. if that’ll happen and if their findings will cast doubt on the pnp’s initial claim that mariannet was raped, then of course, that’ll be a different story. but you must know, this is a blog about my personal take on issues. i write about what i think and if my opinions doesnt suit yours, then i have to say live with it.

why dont you make a blog for yourself? besides, isn’t it about time you say your name and blog(if you have one)? this isnt about being scared nor am i trying to pick a fight with you.

  • just read your blog thru empress maruja.

i’m not sure about the autopsy. the medico legal used “laser” during the autopsy. meron ba non? and the autopsy lasted only two hours. pwede ba yon?

also, mayor duterte was placed in a defensive stance when his mortal enemy, davao rep. nograles, criticized his administration for the death of mariannet. and, knowing duterte, he will do anything to defend himself.

  • mandaya moore:
wow, that laser part i didnt know. ill check about that.

to be honest, rape is not something the pnp would screw around with, i mean at least for me, i dont think they would. and i havent heard about other medical parties who would dare contest the pnp’s initial findings about her rape and lacerations. unless proven otherwise, i’ll have faith in the medical experts who reexamined her. it wont hurt to trust the pnp once in a while.

    thanks for dropping by! ;)

  • I just barely read about this… soooo sad. I really do blame it on the government, if they weren’t so corrupt then maybe people would not be so irrational. What if the autopsy is wrong? So many corrupt people, they can be paid to say anything!
