2007 UPLB Oblation Run

Oopppss…this is the 2004 UPLB Oblation run. I dare not take a picture of them. Not now.

The thing about being in UP is that over time, you become more perceptive, wais and magulang in the name of serious socio/political/acad stuff or just for the heck of it. UP has become a melting pot of sorts and through the years, the student pool has become increasingly diverse and interesting.

The yearly Oblation Run is one event that helps classify the students into, what my friends and I call, ‘categories’. When the APO boys come running, the students would have their own reactions:

Galing sa Private School
The exclusive high schools e.g. Miriam, Ateneo, DLSU, CSA, Saint Scho. etc would have their students looking meek, reserved and well, neat. But when the naked boys come, the girls would blush and be quiet while the boys would be hooting and clapping their hands. Especially if the girls come from a catholic school, be prepared (like my friend who came from Holy Spirit) because they’d even cling to your clothes and hide their faces in shame. But then again, they’d be the ones with the ready digicams and cellphones to take a shot of the boys.

Graduate sa Public School
These students would go berserk and be on the frontline. They’d be cursing and waving at the frat boys for a job well done and they’d be wishing they caught the whole show on cam. The girls would brag about how that particular ‘live show’ wasn’t so new since they’ve had plenty of ’sex stuff’ back in their high school sex education (wow). They’re also the ones who won’t be able to keep quiet for the rest of the day kasi nagpapataasan sila ng ihi.

Taga-Labas
These people do not go to UP; they just want to frequent the campus because of the events and the perks they miss out in their schools. These people would be talking in a different tongue as opposed to UP’s student language e.g. relak-relak, easy lang, toxic, charr, adik etc. and phrases. You’d know them when you hear them talk and see them move. They seem unsure of what to say and what to act especially when the students go wild. They tend to shy away from the crowd and have their own obscure little spot somewhere near the event.

In Hiding
The closet gay or a.k.a your over sensitive guy friend who would open doors for you, pull the best chairs for you or even wait for you outside the girls’ bathroom after re-touching your nose. Often mistaken in your barkada as “Mr. Ideal”, you often wondered why he never had a girlfriend or never had a classroom crush like everyone does. When you have suitors, he’s the first one to make a comment. When wind of the oblation run comes, he’d be nonchalant about it but says he’s willing to accompany you there. But when the naked guys comes running, he’d be the first one to squeal and turn red (SAYANG GWAPO AT MABAIT PA NAMAN).

Freshies
They’d carry the biggest handbags, knapsacks and shoulder bags around. Their binders would be filled with tons of xeroxed reading materials from various subjects and their lab manuals would have crisp plastic covers. They’re the usual wide-eyed, inquisitive little geniuses who are still hungry for college life and independence. They’re the overly excited bunch who chatter about their prof being cute but a sadist, or about their exams being too objective and nose-bleeding or about being excited to watch their very first Oblation Run or the University Follies. They’d be talking and planning about it a week in advance. Plus, they walk fast because they’re afraid of being late in their next class. But when the Oblation Run is at hand, they’d be running or begging their profs to let them watch the show for even a minute. You’d hear them na tumitili and kinikilig with matching patalon-talon pa while holding hands with their female blockmates.

Upper Classmen a.k.a. Wala na kaming CARE
The girls would only carry a puny handbag and hold the rest of her manuals or notebooks in her arm while carrying a nifty hot pink/flowery umbrella. The boys on the other hand would try their best to fit all their stuff e.g. small notebook or filler, wallet, pen and sometimes calculator, in their jeans pocket. Boys never ever want to be seen with a bag or with an umbrella kahit na may bagyo because they think it’s gay. The seniors usually have a leisurely walk to and fro their classes like they’re having a picnic or something in the midde of the day at HUM. So when the APO boys arrive, they’d be looking as if nothing happening.

  • Streaking–yeah!

I didn’t move my blog after all. I posted something about it in one of my previous entries. Some malware seemed to creep into the main server of the site host. I think they managed to find the problem and get rid of it.

    Take it easy!

  • the up oblation run should make pgma proud.

“if this is not transparency,” she could ask her critics, “then what is?”

i recommend that she tells her advisers to follow suit in good faith and do their thing at luneta.

anyway, i thought the apo boys are elitists and braggarts. i confess i was mistaken. as they display their assets, they show humility by covering their faces.

  • i looked at the FULL FRONTAL pics posted elsewhere…only NOW do i understand why TRUST condoms (sold here in Manila) are so SMALL! and TIGHT!

  • My sis (from the org) even told me back then that I looked like an ‘04. Seriously! Though I wasn’t offended by that comment since sanay na ko.

Anyway, I haven’t watched the Oblation Run last Thursday (tama ba?) since may class ako nun. And if given the chance, baka hindi na rin ako manood nun. Lol.

  • volume-addict:
    you call this streaking? bwaha.

    plaridel:
to some extent, frat boys (and soro girls and those with orgs) are mayayabang. but only to their rival frat/soro or org.

    weener looker:
    haha. ;)

    utakgago:
the oblation run doesnt excite me (not that it has). youd be bored. promise.

thanks for dropping by guysh! :)

  • i’ve never watched the oblation run, even when our office was located in UPD.

hmm most of my officemates are UP alumni. i wonder if they took part in the oblation run when they were still students…

  • lol@your analysis =]

my first and only participation in the oblation run AS AN AUDIENCE was in my freshman year in diliman in ‘96. my anti-social friends and i tried to avoid the onslaught of shrieking, camera-toting, ogling humanity hence our decision to just trot and hide in our Chemistry lab class. only to find out that the APO guys use the Chemistry Pavilion men’s room as their proverbial telephone booth… and then the supermen were off…

  • cyberpunk:
try asking if they’re a member of the apo frat. the neophytes are always prone to doing the oblation run. ;)

    ian:

  • nins, i think you’ll find this interesting: http://www.brazilianartists.net/home/flags/

anyway, believe it or not, i have never watched the oblation run (silip lang from a bathroom window when i was in 2nd year), the updil lantern parade (cuz up manila’s isn’t really up to par with updil’s), uaap games, and the uaap cheerdance thing.

    parang dumaan lang ako. yuck.

  • this is stereotyping at its finest!

  • Shefali Sanghvi

The Oblation run is a great event and it has to be seen as an expression of freedom more than anything else. It is not vulgar at all. However, the boys naked boys should refrain from making vulgar gestures and rather concentrate on the issues which really need to be foccused upon. Nudity has always been a mystery and people are bound to to come in hoards to view naked participants, so it is easier to pass on your message to a larger audience.
On the lighter side, the girls also get a chance to view their classmates in their birthday suits and this chance should never be missed by any girl. I watched the action live as a guest in UP. Back home in India we never have such an event. I must thank my friend Annabel who made me watch the event. Seeing so many boys naked at a feets distance from made me a lot very nervous as i had never seen a naked adult male before and here i was in the company of over 30 naked boys lined up. I didnt even have the courage to look at their “………” which were so very visible. But after this event i feel that even as a spectator it made me a lot more confident about nudity and confident of being among guys back in India.

  • shefali sanghvi:
yes i agree with you that the APO should focus more on issues rather than their being naked on campus. sometimes their ‘nakedness’ tends to overshadow or worse, oversimplify the meaning of this event.

wow so you were once a guest at UP? i bet seeing them all around you made you feel giddy. it must be memorable as my first oblation was.

    thanks for dropping by! :)

  • Hey nina, this blog is cool. Amazing ceremony that was. How is it like being amongst so many naked guys many of whom are your own friends and you have never seen them like this before ? what is the expression of the girls when they recognize the guys and how do the guys react ? Do you girls tease them in class the other day saying “i saw your toy!”. An what happens if a guy gets an erection amidst all the commotion ? I guess he must be covering that part then. . . ha ha ha. But i must say good for the girls. How was ur first oblation and what was your reaction ? Do let us know your experience too.

  • william brite:
my blockmates and i (back when we were freshmen) were supposed to go back to our dorm and sleep through the whole event. we were tired and we valued sleep about everything else. so we went back to the dorm but had lunch first. while we were having lunch, the oblation runners came barging in the dorm’s cafeteria. unknown to us, they have this tradition of going to their neophytes’ dorms (dorms that are inside the campus) to well, do their stuff. we were aware that we had two dormates who were APO neophytes at that time but we didn’t know that they could literally invade the entire first floor of the dorm. so there we were, eating hotdogs and spring rolls and rice, and there they were ruining our appetite. so there. haha. ;)

    thanks for visiting! :)

  • Do the girls have the guts to stare directly at the penises? and is touching allowed ?

  • lica:
staring is okay but touching and coming too close is no and no. :)

Hi NINA, nice write up on the spirit of the Oblation Run. My friend Shefali has narrated her experience of watching the oblation run on your blog earlier (precisely on 6th feb) and i too was a part of the audience alongwith our filipino friend Annabel, lois and her bunch of classmates from UP. Shefali, Priti, Nayana and myself were the only four Indians to watch the run live and to be true, we never expected that there could ever be such a kind of a ceremony anywhere in this world. It was a mind blowing experience.
Kudos to the filipino girls who watch the naked guys so bravely, rather stare at their equipments, hehehe.
BTW, Shefali was not as shy as she is now claiming to be, though we covered our faces we were interested in looking at the penises (first time live in our lives). I swear it was the first time.
The entire passage was crowded and smelly and noisy. The moment the guys came in there were loud screams from everyone and then i dont know what all happened next because we were like zapped seeing the guys stark naked. We saw several guys with designer penises, hehehe i mean some had shaved off their pubic hair and i also saw a guy who had a ribbon or thread tied around his penis, really. . . no jokes, i did see it. Most of them had dark penises and i wish i had seen a fair one too. We were like ” is this the way guys look without clothes ! ! !” and the moment the guys stopped near us to display their playcards, we were like sweating out of tension. We desperately wanted to examine their penises from a close distance but could’nt muster the courage to do so and we nervously stared at the placards not knowing what message was written on it as we dont understand the language! At that time none of us wanted to have a rose from the naked guys but when we went back to out friends place we regretted the fact that none of the guys stopped to give us a rose, we wished that atleast one guy should have given us a rose each because we were the only odd looking girls there ! I wish i can attend the oblation run every year. It bonds everyone so well. That nite we all friends (girls only) spent out entire time talking about guys and their anatomy with lois entertaining us with her real life experiences (top secret-hehehe).
It was a really really really funny site to see the boys naked, their ‘equipment’ looks so cute and funny when its not erect. Gutsy boys and gutsy girls, we love filipinos for their frank and free attitude. I only wish that the boys should not cover their faces, seeing their faces will add to the excitement. Thanks for re-igniting our memories of the oblation run.
(now we will force Priti to narrate her experiences of the oblation run. Nayana is out of touch but if ever she meets me, i will surely ask her to give her views on this blog)

  • Dear Suverna:
You and your friends sound like you are very cute and very innocent. So far, you have been sheltered from nudity, etc., and there is nothing at all wrong with that. You should be proud of your upbringing and of how it helped to make you who you are. On the other hand, ALL girls are curious about male bodies. This interest is perfectly normal, and need cause you no shame.

The Oblation Run is a rare display of public nudity. You will see this type of event every day, but when you do, you have every right to enjoy it as much as the other girls do–or more, since this OR was your first such experience. Being a little embarrassed is part of the fun. The Oblation run awoke feelings that you didn’t know you had. You and your girlfriends are encouraged explore these feelings by visiting a “clothing optional” beach, which can be found in many places the world over. At these, no one will mind at all if you prefer to remain fully clothed. If you ever come to the US West Coast, you MUST visit Black’s Beach, near San Diego. On a sunny summer weekend, you’ll see about 2000 naked guys of all races, ages, and stages of physical development. You will notice fewer girls and women, and fewer still, nude. The beach has rest facilities, lifeguards, and police patrols, so is safe. Judging from the comments in your post, you and your friends might enjoy sunbathing near the volleyball net, where you can watch the fit, young guys run, jump, and chase the ball while completely naked. Their focus will be on the game, so you girls are free to focus on anything (or anyone) you wish. Oh, yes, most of the guys will have fair skin, and none will have his face covered.

As you face more of the real world and its conflicting cultures and values, you will keep the strength gained from your upbringing and grow from your new experiences. You will become a more liberated and confident person. Explore, enjoy!

  • Nina:
Great blog. But please don’t be too hard on the increased popularity of the Oblation Run just because the focus seems to have shifted from the message (sacrifice) to the media (guys running around in the buff). Remember–Marshall Mc Luhan taught us that the medium IS the message! With a more popular event, as Shevali (above) says, “…it is easier to pass on your message to a larger audience”. The O Run was enthusiastically enjoyed by the participant and the spectator alike (along with the press). I read of it here in Texas! The event caused me to re-read the history of WWII and to remember with tearful awe the sacrfifices of so many thousands of Filipinos during that period.

See? Naked guys are not all bad. I’m one myself, when I’m taking a shower! Keep this blog alive!

    Mike

  • Were these guys circumcised?

  • yep. they are. its a normal practice here in my country. =)

  • Are they muslims? Which religion do you follow in your country?

  • Wow! You girls saw circumcised penises and saw the extra stuff which is otherwise hidden under foreskin!!! I really envy filipino girls.

  • Suverna Deshpande

eekkkssssss ! ! ! ur post sounds so gross Neha. hehehe. u know at first i didnt know that the boys were cut. I thought that they had rolled up the skin. anyways…it looks cute and funny.

  • rolled up, hehehe, why would they roll up and not everybody will. I’ve seen nagas in india, but these are your classmates. When I imagine my classmates in the nude …Oh my gosh!!!
Looks like you observed those penises very carefully. elaborate yaar.

  • Suverna Deshpande

Nah…..i didnt observe it closely……hehehe. And they were not my clssmates, i was in Phillipines for a short study program and i had never seen a sight like this before. Embarrassing but very enjoyable.

  • i’ve heard about the brave girls taking photos of the nude guys.wow… did you take any photos?

  • When is the next Oblation Run scheduled? I get to Manila occasionally. No way I’d miss the event if I can arrange it. I just wish they were MY classmates

  • Thank god the discussion changed from the penises of the oblation run to the dates of the oblation run. hehehehehe

  • country be disgraceful ,be immoral ,drag the feet ,prehistory

  • Gay University

country be disgraceful ,be immoral ,drag the feet ,prehistory

  • plaese does anybody know what date will be the next oblation run?

    • its always on december, around the third week before the lantern parade. the up campuses have different dates for the oblation run.

  • Thanks for that. So how would anyone get to watch – I mean is it open to anybody or just UP students? How would we find out, nearer the time, what date, place and time this will start? I guess there are limits to the number of people who security will let into the place? And finally, how long does this all last?

  • I love the brisk movement of the dangling penises of these boys left-right-left. It makes their dicks gather more attention and makes dicks attractive.

  • Here is a group for people who would like a female oblation run: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=112198858296
