2007 Highlights

Before we bid goodbye to 2007, let’s look at the newsmakers that literally made this year fuming hot with intrigues, mishaps and boo-boos:

  • 2007 Elections. This year’s summer set the stage for one of the most neck-breaking and most infuriating political sagas we’ve seen in recent years. From Bedol’s disappearing acts, the Maguindanao and Lanao failure of elections and even to Koko VS. Migz bid in the senate, one cannot deny that the midterm elections did us damage in one way or another. My favorite quote from this event came from Lito Lapid. When asked on how he thinks he’ll fair against Binay in the Makati City Elections, he said:

“Mananalo ako. Ako, sa buong Pilipinas popular, eh sya sa Makati lang sikat.”

Isang bagsak para kay Mr. Lapid!

  • Unexplained Killings. I remember Sec. Gonzales calling Phillip Alston a muchacho of the UN and Sec. Ermita changing the term ‘extrajudicial killings’ to merely unexplained deaths. The former even said that Julia Campbell’s death was her own mistake for walking alone at night. The Berdugo a.k.a. Gen. Palparan was never involved in any of the people reportedly missing and neither was the AFP used to abduct the missing activists and journalists.
  • Armando Ducat.  Remember the hostage taking scenario at the Manila City Hall? With Chavit and Bong Revilla acting as ‘negotiators’? That one. The thing that I couldn’t forget were his demands: (1) free education for the kids he was supporting in a daycare, (2) that corruption be stopped, and (3) rid our country of bad politicians.
  • ZTE and CyberEd. The root of all evil is FG and PGMA, este, I mean, is money. And bridging the gap is Abalos.
  • Erap convicted, Erap pardoned. Politicians in this country can never be trusted to side with what they stand for e.g. Sen. Enrile, Sen. Santiago the list just goes on and one. They will always find ways or reasons, rather, to justify their change of hearts.
  • Glorietta Bombing. The PNP has yet to release their final and conclusive report about the true nature of the explosion; whether it was done by terrorists or by methane gas build up. If you ask me, I’d say they’re only relying on intuition.
  • Trillanes and Lim hostage Manila Peninsula. The supposed People’s Power Revolution 2.0 failed just as it was about to stand up. Juvenile and brash.
  • Mariannet Amper’s Death. The debate is still on; whether she was raped then decided to commit suicide or suicide due to poverty. I haven’t had any updates as to how this girl’s case is moving along.
  • Batasang Pambansa’s Explosion. Rep. Wahab Akbar died as a result of this bombing. As always, fingers are being pointed to every direction, except maybe on the mastermind.
  • Impeachment by Pulido, GO and some groups. The bribery of 190 congressmen and the launch of 3 impeachment complaints against Her Highness. But then again, the Pulido case got shot down in just a matter of days. Like that wasn’t expected to happen.
  • Jalosjos’ Commutation. This convicted child rapist should be gagged, literally.
  • AGB Nielsen Survey. The network war is on: who’s telling the truth?

The Special Awards

Best Hairdo: JDVIII. Pakiaminaside from thinning, balding and curling, Joey’s hair is a pathetic excuse to hide his bad taste in hairstyle. Clearly, he needs a professional stylist. I’m guessing he’s idol is Donald Trump.

Best worst actor disguised as a Senator: Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla. Only in this country can you see senators making movies instead of doing their legislative duties. And mind you, Jinggoy is slated to win the best actor award for this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. What an achievement!

Well-Loved Journalist: Malu Fernandez. I think it’s safe to say that everyone is aware of what she wrote and what happened after that. I don’t have any updates as to what she’s up to nowadays but hopefully, as long as keeps her mouth shut, she’s doing fantastic.

Best Team Player: Benjamin Abalos. When the ZTE Deal was collapsing under so much pressure, then Comelec Commissioner Abalos had to take one for the team. And after that, I hear nothing from the senate investigations. I hope that it will not rot in court like the impeachment cases against PGMA.

Best Breakthrough Performance: Atty. Adel Tamano. His dimples are so adorable. When he’s on t.v. as GO’s spokesman, its like the bad news goes away and you tend to focus on him instead. Good choice! Move over Marc Nelson.

Best Actress: PGMA. Hands down. Go Madam President!

Best Actors: Romeo Jalosjos and Teofisto Guinggona. I could never understand why Jalosjos is given too much attention and why Guingona denied his involvement in the Manila Peninsula Siege saying he wasn’t aware of any coup plot when in fact he was sitting right beside Gen. Lim when he read his and Trillanes’ demands. Trapos.

Tinimbang ka ngunit kulang Award: Sen. Antonio Trillanes. His attempts were premature, lacked support and made too hasty to reach a proper conclusion. He caused more trouble than I thought.

  • One issue that worries me is the way the government has treated the local media out there lately. The deaths of small-town journalists at the hands of politicians who want to silence them is scary. The public has the right to know what their government is doing, and to cover it up just like that…disturbing. Look at the job the powers-that-be did with the folks trying to cover the most recent coup attempt.

Nga pala…happy new year din to you and your family! Looks like we’re in for more shenanigans this 2008.

  • Nina,

I like the new layout and color scheme of your blog, an excellent improvement, and of course the highlights of the year.

Happy new Year to you and your readers…….

  • Wala bang good thing na nangyari the previous year? I think meron din namang highlight na talagang “high” for the country :)

i agree with alex… a list of what went well in the Philippines for 2007 is an excellent focus for a blog entry =] one item comes to mind: the candidacy of Ang Kapatiran senatoriables in the May 2007 polls.

your turn now =] (parang meme harhar ay, di ko pala ‘to blog!)

PS- i love the awards you handed out above nonetheless =]

dr. martin bautista came from pgh right? he’s my brod’s brod in phi. sayang talaga sila kasi i thought they’d make it somehow pero they lacked funding and machinery. but still they had my vote. i only voted 5 senators last elections and 3 were kapatiran candidates.

  • In connection to the election thing, I have to say that our voters are actually becoming more and more mature now… I mean compared to how it was before… imagine a priest actually became governor of Pampanga… that is a good sign and I hope it reverberates to other regions… kaya lang ngayon si erap gusto na namang tumakbo…

  • can i put in the ditzy comment?
